Winter is on the horizon as Japan’s weather forecast for 2024-25 promises a truly unforgettable season, with projections of Niseko’s heaviest snowfall in over a decade. Thanks to La Niña’s influence, the Japan Meteorological Association (JMA) anticipates colder temperatures and abundant snow across the country, setting the stage for an amazing winter season packed with powder days. According to NOAA’s October 2024 ENSO Update, La Niña is expected to influence the season heavily, with a high likelihood of colder, snowier conditions across Japan's mountainous regions.
Located on Japan’s snowy west coast, Niseko often benefits from seasonal patterns that bring heavy snowfalls due to cold air flowing from Siberia across the Sea of Japan. This year, forecasts predict that Niseko will experience above-average snowfall from December to February, with experts suggesting we could see the heaviest accumulation in over ten years.
This isn’t the first time La Niña has created standout seasons in Japan. The 2021-22 winter, heavily impacted by La Niña, saw resorts across Japan receive exceptional snowfall. Myoko, for instance, accumulated over 16 metres of snow—significantly more than last season’s 10.5 metres—according to Snow Japan’s historical records.
Niseko, too, has thrived under La Niña’s snowy influence. During the 2021-22 season, the area received up to 15 metres of snowfall by some counts, far above the norm. Data from Kutchan Town’s weather station, situated at ground level, shows that Niseko receives about an extra metre of snow during La Niña years. With the increased accumulation at higher altitudes, Niseko’s famed powder-filled slopes become even more of a paradise for skiers and snowboarders.
So if you’ve been dreaming of deep powder days and breathtaking views, this winter will be the perfect time to visit Niseko. From December through February, the forecast suggests a season full of incredible conditions, ideal for everyone from beginners to advanced.
